Some more highlights from The Duchess of Cambridge's visit yesterday with children and families supported by @Family_Action to a Christmas tree farm, on the day she became their Royal Patron. Family Action was founded in 1869 to help families in difficulty by giving them practical help and support — the new patronage aligns with The Duchess’s longstanding work on the early years, and the importance of supporting children and families during this seminal period of their lives. Today, The Queen visited @coram.uk which is the oldest children’s charity in the UK, to meet staff and children, as well as open the new Queen Elizabeth II Centre. The Coram charity has evolved from the “Foundling Hospital” which was created as the first home in London to care for abandoned babies. In picture five, The Queen met 102 year-old Edward Newton, the oldest surviving pupil from the hospital, and the youngest child currently receiving care, 14-month-old Mia. Her Majesty placed a decoration on the Christmas Tree and heard from young people who have been adopted. The Queen also heard from the Chief Executive who said: “Coram is as needed as ever and we shall not rest until every child is protected. The Queen Elizabeth centre will be a place where the voices of children are heard."

Watch The Christmas Trees arrive at Buckingham Palace ? Every year, three trees are placed in the Marble Hall – and a garland is fixed along the grand staircase. The custom of displaying Christmas trees was introduced to Britain in the late 18th by Queen Charlotte, consort of King George III, although it was a yew tree rather than a fir that was used. The Christmas tree was popularised by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in the nineteenth century. The Christmas Trees standing today at Buckingham Palace were grown in Windsor.

1957 saw The Queen’s first televised Christmas message, broadcast live from the Long Library at Sandringham, Norfolk. The Queen’s grandfather, King George V broadcast the first Christmas message in 1932. The text for King George’s speech was written by poet and writer Rudyard Kipling and included the words, “I speak now from my home and from my heart to you all.” .
